It's a new year and many people have made resolutions to stay fit and active. I know how quickly it is to lose motivation and next step is to give up. But before you do that, give it one more try. Ask yourself can I switch things around to my liking and get RESULTS? Yes and I'm here to offer some tips so you can get back on track again.
This is a no brainer but it needs to be said... Abs are made in the kitchen. No matter how many crunches you do, you WILL NOT get the results if you don't practice healthy eating habits. Get rid of processed foods, bake instead of frying, try new dishes by preparing at home, and up your fruits and veggie intake. Trust me, the foods will taste much better when you're in control and don't have to guess what you're eating.
CONFESSION: I wasn't always into healthy eating. For the longest time I was an everyday fast food eater. Shocking! I know, but we all have a story. My moment came when I worked in a well known casual dining restaurant. There was a dish that was very
heart attack on a plate popular on the menu. Seeing how it was being prepared had me like....
People really eat this?!?
The entire time I worked there I NEVER had that dish. I had other items on the menu but I was one of those that made hella modifications. It was then that I really started looking into healthy eating. So what's the first thing we eat when wanting to eat healthier? Salads and I quickly hated it. I told myself there has to be another way to enjoy this.
I simply started researching and these are a list of some of my favorite salads that I eat from time to time. With eating salads I needed dressings to go along with them. My favorite dressing was buttermilk ranch. I was a snob with it too, if I didn't see buttermilk written across the packet/bottle I wasn't touching it. During that time, I started reading labels a lot more. I would see long list of hard to pronounce ingredients that just didn't sit well with me.
Again I started researching and found two recipes that I would have never cared for prior to eating healthier. First one is spicy ranch dressing (I've updated the ingredients used but the steps are still the same. I use ranch dressing from TJ's, fresh jalapeños, and sriracha sauce). That's it.
Another is a simple dressing to make with ingredients you might already have on hand. It will taste great with just about any salad you make.
Juice of 1 lime, fresh garlic, olive oil, red or white wine vinegar, salt, and pepper. Whisk in a bowl and BOOM! Your taste buds will happy with this one. You can also add in just about any of your favorite herbs and spices. Play around with different ingredients to find the right taste for you. Be creative!
Also, try reducing your meat consumption by participating in Meatless Monday. I do this all the time and always look forward to my next meatless meal adventure. Using fresh, natural, organic, quality ingredients is the best thing you can do for your body. Ever heard the saying let thy food be thy medicine. Try it! Your body will thank you.
*Psssst... I think it's a crime not to indulge and I have my moments, but I do it in moderation.
ANOTHER CONFESSION: As much as I advocate being fit, I'm "lazy" with my workouts. I wish there was an app where I can watch someone else work out and I reap the benefits. Ha! So, I wake up from my dream, roll outta bed, and get outside huffing and puffing for the results. *writes letter to Silicon Valley*
The park I go to has workout stations that can be used for FREE. I've been taking advantage of station #5. It's called the Stability & Balance Disc and has become my new fav. This station has pictures with guides on how to do the exercises. I use to hate doing squats but the more I started doing them, I started to enjoy and get the results I'm looking for.
I also run but I've been slacking in that area as of late. But I'm ready to pick up the pace soon and will be sharing more of me finally training for a
*You can also hire a personal trainer if you're not sure where to start. But always do your research.
There's something called time management with tools and resources to help you. I highly recommend that you use it. I'm old school and as much as I enjoy technology, I still love the good ol' pen and paper. So much so that my nickname at one time was paper trail because of how easy it was to find me. I've gotten better organized with my paper trails.
Find what works for you. I have 3 calendars (wall, mini desk, and pocket), a small notebook, sticky notes, and highlighters. I also utilize the notes app on my phone. This has worked well for me. When I wake up I pretty much know what the day is going to look like. I don't feel the need to jot down every single thing. Again find what works for you. Once you do that you will have time for the most important thing at the end of the day. Well, I know I do.
Water keeps you hydrated and also keeps you full so you're not mindlessly snacking. I have not stocked my refrigerator with soda in over 10 years and I plan on keeping it that way. When I get tired of water, I make my own iced tea. I fill it up, put in the freezer, and take it with me on the go.

new fitness gears to stay motivated. Add some colors! Stick with what you can afford. You do not need to break the bank. I can't afford those $80-$90 sports bra. There's no shame in my game. I've shopped *goes to clearance racks* at Target, Marshall's, Old Navy and heck even some thrift stores. What I'm wearing is under $60.
-Nike Flex 2015 Run from Marshall's around $40. Extremely comfortable it's like I'm barefoot.
-Red Tights from F21 $4. I have them in several different colors.
-Black Top with the word INSPIRE written across from F21 $11. When I saw this top I knew I had to have it because my word for 2017 is INSPIRE.
I don't care if it's in season or not. Brand name or not. As long as I'm motivated to wear it and get my workout on.
Return To Natural/Protective Styles
I do my own hair and haven't been to the salon since 2006. Thanks to the natural hair community and the rabbit hole known as YouTube. It has been a major lifesaver for someone like me who is on a tight budget and want to workout. This is a protective style that I did myself. It's similar to this style I did a while back just longer and a little fuller.
I said I wasn't going to do this style again but I lied. When I don't have it out, I put it in two big braids or one big braid to the side. This allows me to get my workout on and not be bothered with my hair. When I want to wear it out, I'll flex-rod the ends with a spritz water that I make and next day I have nice soft curls. Practice makes perfect and I've gotten better at doing certain styles.
Don't let your hair get in the way of your health.
