Green Light- Traci & Kelly

Eco-sistas that are conscious about the waste they accumulate

How long have you been eco-friendly? We're actually still a work in progress. We have learned a lot about recycling but we'd really like to be as close to zero waste as possible.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? It really makes us more conscious about the waste we accumulate. We like knowing our packaging won't end up in a landfill but it does, it's still biodegradable. If we all do our little part it'll make a big impact.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? As with anything that is better for you and better for the environment, eco-friendly products are oftentimes more expensive.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Start with one or two things, like implementing an earth friendly laundry detergent or composting all of your fruit rinds and old veggies. When you can walk, take public transit, or ride your bike instead of driving. Bring your own bags to the market. These things make a difference.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? Not really. We know it's an ongoing process and some days just seem impossible to be completely green and that's ok. We have been basically been conditioned to be wasteful, so it will take time to unlearn what has become the norm. We know little tweaks in our daily regimens will decrease our carbon footprints and that is the goal.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? Traci- The loc'd queen has been natural for 12 years wearing locs for 8 years.

Kelly- Been rocking my afro since 2008.

We keep it simple by using products with ingredients we can pronounce. And now that we're in Atlanta, we can get many of these products locally from sisters with hair like ours. It works perfectly with our green initiative.

Is there anything you like to add? For anyone trying to create a greener lifestyle visit Fort Negrita. This sister answers all of the looming questions you may have about being zero waster. She has helped us a lot in our transition.
