Green Light- Krishna

An eco-sista who says don't feel guilty if you don't meet every goal

How long have you been eco-friendly? I have been eco-friendly for about 10 years.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? When I first started I wasn't really dedicated, just made a few small changes here and there. Often times going back to the old way of doing things. Then my husband and I found out I was pregnant and I knew I needed to stick with the changes so the he could grow up in a safe environment.

What do you like about it? I like that I am making a difference, it helps me feel more connected to the world in which I am apart of.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? My husband was the biggest challenge, LOL! He didn't understand why I wanted to go into the backyard, dig up grass we paid a lot to have cared for and plant a garden. He kept reminding me that I was a city girl not a farmer. He's since come around and realizes that not only does it save on food bills, being out there in my little garden watching the earth transform keeps me calm.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Don't feel guilty if you don't meet every goal you've set. The small steps matter.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? I do at times, like when I forget my son's water bottle before a game and then I'm forced to go buy a plastic bottle. I feel a little guilt in that instance, but then I realize that it doesn't happen all the time and when it does I can cut the bottles in half and use them as planters.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I've been natural again… for 11 years. I went through my entire life until I was 22 without relaxing my hair. Then a friend convinced me I needed to perm for a specific style. I was never good at going to get touch ups and one day I just said I'm done. I may have had a relaxer for 5-6 years and that was it. I keep it fly (Thank You!) by moisturizing my hair regularly, and by using coconut oil instead of other heavier products that do damage.

Is there anything you like to add? First, I want to say thank you for the opportunity to share my story. Also, for those thinking that they need a whole lot of land, or space to grow a garden, you don't. I grew my first garden in the window seal of my apartment.
