Green Light- Alisha

An eco-sista who loves standing up for something

How long have you been eco-friendly? I want to say I've always been eco-friendly but I really became consciously eco-friendly at the age of 13 and made the active choice to live that way at 21.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I want future generations to be able to appreciate all that I am able too, it's extremely hard to see how we are impacting our environment negatively. Whether it's animals, agriculture, or pollution. We're detrimental to this beautiful land and not only that but we owe it to ourselves as inhabitants to take better care of our surroundings. The thought that we can wipe out species, destroy land, and do irreversible damage is absolutely disheartening.

What do you like about it? I love standing up for something, even though it feels like I'm often standing alone. Knowing that I am doing MY personal best to make a difference feels rewarding and keeps my conscience clear at nights.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? I think the biggest challenge I had was trying to not get upset when people didn't take me seriously and also when they didn't respect the way I did things. Things like recycling, composting, turning the lights off, and conserving energy. I realized that I could only control me and that I had to do what I do.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Educate yourself, it's so much easier to do when you understand the impact you have. Start with the little things, they make the most impact and be consistent. It takes time to become part of your lifestyle.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? I do feel like that at times, but we have to be kind to ourselves as well. We're not perfect and we're bound to make mistakes but I also remember that I'm still doing better than those who don't care and it's okay to mess up every now and again. Sometimes I leave the water on too long, throw recycling in the garbage and other things but more often than not I don't do it so I'm gentle on myself when I do mess up. I know where my heart is that's what matters.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? Hmm… I've been natural for about 4 years now. It doesn't look like it but I'm 100% natural. There are no chemicals in my hair, I happen to have very soft curls that I prefer to straighten because they're pretty unruly and I'm a little short on time so I don't have the time it takes to tame them everyday. I keep my hair super fly by using my kitchen made products, no one knows this but I have my own line of natural hair products. They're awesome and the work like magic.

Is there anything you like to add? Green is the new black, we're so powerful and we're better together. Start where you are and use what you have. I also have an awesome blog about being of service you can check me out a little more at A S Wedderburn
