Green Light- Sheryl

You don't have to give up everything you like says this eco-sista

How long have you been eco-friendly? I have been eco-friendly for about ten months now.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I was concerned about the health of our environment and that of my family. I started to look into more environmentally friendly ways of living. Eco-friendly home cleaning, products, etc.

What do you like about it? I now use fewer chemicals. Chemicals washed down the drain taint the water supply, causing problems for wildlife and humans alike. This made me look for alternative ways to replace some chemical with more eco-friendly methods like using white vinegar and baking soda to clean kitchen and bathroom. Change our personal body care items. I did replace our shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and creams with natural versions (homemade versions). Your body will thank you.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? I will say my biggest challenge was and is still time. Hunting for best buy from organic shops and as a wife and a working mom of two energetic kids plus blogging. I use to wish the clock had 30 hours instead of 24 even though I know given 30 hours a day will still not be enough…LOL. With the fast moving world we are living in, we tend to get impatient. So time is my greatest challenge so far. I need all the time to manage my things from buying organic food and oil to mixing my homemade products. All this need time and patience which I still have to squeeze in between my busy schedule.

I get a big challenge at home running after my kids to turn off the light when the leave their rooms. In short everywhere at home , not to mention the fact running the water when brushing their teeth.

As a Cameroonian, I was brought up to cook all natural and fresh food. Thank God I still uphold this standard. I haven't change that much in my own home now living in Germany. I cook mostly all natural. I hardly buy process food. As a rule of thumb, we try to eat as naturally and healthy as possible. But buying organic food and products isn't financially feasible though.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? I will say we all can develop an eco-friendly habits by changing little things we do in our everyday life. Small things can make a huge difference. Let us use less and make the most of what we have. Re-use things that can be used more than once, instead of chucking them away after one use. I re-use my mayonnaise container for my DIY hair shampoo. Take plastic bags, better still get an organic cotton bag or a big bag of your own to the store. Giving things you don't want any more to the charity shops. Turn off lights in empty rooms and use a programmable thermostat. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? Oh yes, so very often. Many times when it's not possible for me to walk the kids to school, work, or use the public transport. The worst part is when waiting for my kids to come out from school and then waiting with my car running because I have to keep my car warm in winter or cool in summer. Then I get this hypocritical feeling. Pollution is what I'm doing.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I have been natural for 5 months. Since May 29, 2014 with BC of about 1/4 inch. I'm still learning how to manage my hair and how to keep it healthy. With TWA there are much we can do and still so little we can do when it comes to rocking it FLY. I'm just enjoying my healthy hair journey. I'm rocking my hair with so much love and care.

Is there anything you like to add? Of course, you don't have to give up everything that you like and are used to. Read up on things that you can substitute that won't use as much energy or resources as the things you're currently using. Doing this can lower your impact without causing you to lower your lifestyle. Eating more of natural foods will make you more aware of the amazing direct health benefits the Earth provides. There are always natural alternative that will naturally take care of our problems with less toxin.
