Green Light- Mary

An eco-sista whose mantra is "Do your best with what you've been given"

How long have you been eco-friendly? I've been eco-friendly since high school (circa 2001)- mainly because I liked being a politically "rebellious" trendsetter. I thought it was cool to care about the planet, have colorful loss, and embrace all things natural.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? Today I am eco-friendly for spiritual reasons. I believe that we should appreciate the beauty of this world that we've been blessed to experience and give back in love what we take in resources. Since becoming vegetarian, I've developed a deep sense of respect for all living creatures. The more I avoid chemicals/GMOs/Processed Foods/Toxic People, I've seen my health & overall well-being blossom!

What do you like about it? I like knowing that I'm doing my part, however small, to positively influence the bubble I live in by embracing all things natural. I also enjoy the health benefits a natural lifestyle provides and I've seen my spiritual practice of yoga & meditation really flourish. I feel more connected to the planet and nature as a whole. I'm about to turn the big {30}, but people say I look younger now than ever.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? Girl…yes. My natural life turns upside down when I'm really stressed out and short on time. I start eating processed foods, living however, and not getting enough sleep. Stress is detrimental to a natural lifestyle-avoid it like the plague.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Don't just follow the trend- research, research, research! Educate yourself on the benefits of living a more natural lifestyle so that when challenges come, you know why you're living the way you do. If you have friends and family in your life who aren't supportive of the healthy changes you've made, hop online and get connected with other amazing individuals who can provide a community for you. Also, you don't have to shop at expensive natural health stores. Check out your local farmers market or join a co-op!

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? I do feel like a green hypocrite sometimes- especially when financially I can't afford to live as natural and healthy as I'd like. The mantra that I always go back to during those times is, "Do your best with what you've been given. The important thing is to stay encouraged.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? The latest round of natural- about 2 years. I was natural for 3 years before that, but ruined my hair with a Brazilian Keratin treatment. Never. Again. My regimen includes KeraVeda and Darcy's Botanicals. I'm rocking a puff 70% of the time and I also love twist-outs when I have time to do them!
