Green Light- Isis

An eco-sista who absolutely loves nature especially when it's clean and healthy

How long have you been eco-friendly? Although I've always done my best to do my share of taking care of our environment, I've been making extra conscious effort to live naturally and eco-friendly since late 2009, early 2010. A few of my extra conscious efforts include participating in the Big Chop (cutting all of my hair off to grow it back completely natural) which I did in July of 2010. I actively participate in community service towards the betterment of our society and environment for a very, very long time now. And last, but not least, I am a vegetarian, which I've been practicing since late October of last year.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? We take for granted our environment and the many natural things on our planet that can help us live better and healthier individually and wholly as humans altogether. I enjoy reaping the benefits of living naturally and eco-friendly. As I mentioned earlier, I've always been one to do my fair share of community service, gardening, environmental cleaning, etc. just because of the different organizations I was a part of and because that's just one of the values my parents made sure I understood. As I grew older and really developed my own personal value in living naturally and eco-friendly, I made even more conscious decisions to incorporate it into my lifestyle as much as I possibly could.

What do you like about it? My hair grows so much faster than many who use processed chemicals and other unnatural products in their hair. My skin is often radiantly glowing and soft because of my avid use of olive oil, shea butter, and other great natural products. I love community service and helping others and our environment. I enjoy the way helping to keep our environment beautiful makes me feel and I especially love the long-term visuals of practicing such a healthy habit like keeping our environment clean. I absolutely love nature, especially when it's clean and healthy!

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? Of course, as all journeys in life, I have faced challenges in practicing such a healthy, eco-friendly lifestyle. For one, not very many people are aware of the benefits of the lifestyle which means not everyone responds positively at first. Thankfully though, there are people like you and I who are continuing to raise awareness in the benefits of being eco-friendly. High five to us, girlfriend! I'd say that's been the biggest obstacle so far is having to explain to (what feels like) every single person my reasons for making a personal decision to live naturally and eco-friendly. Affordability runs a second close though, haha.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Make sure that you do your research and really find the value in what a fulfilling lifestyle living naturally and eco-friendly is. It really has much more than physical benefits to offer. I hope that, as I have, you will be able to transform spiritually and mentally as you grow and prosper in life's journey. It's been my favorite reason for continuing on in the lifestyle. I have connected with myself in ways that I never thought possible. Take your time with it, grow with it, and HAVE FUN with it! Pinterest and blogs are a GREAT way to get started!

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? Of course, we all feel that way and it's okay. We as humans are all vulnerable to temptation which is why I definitely recommend finding others who are practicing the lifestyle as well so you aren't on your journey alone. Sometimes I feel tempted because the unnatural products and other things I try to refrain from, like most things that tempt us, are so convenient. FIGHT THE URGE and plan accordingly so that you don't need the convenience of the lesser choice. If you do end up backsliding, just keep in mind that even backsliding and moving forward is better than backsliding and giving up! We are all capable of making a mistake. Don't be discouraged and be sure to remind yourself daily of the reasons you chose to develop living healthy, naturally, and eco-friendly. YOU CAN DO IT!

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I re-crowned myself early July 2010 and have been keeping it fly ever since by learning (my hair) and all of her likes and dislikes. I wash my hair as often as I can and I do my best to style her in ways that allow her to express herself (which means I don't have to do a lot of upkeep). I take advice from other natural women at times, but I still watch, respond, and listen to what my hair shows me she agrees with and what she doesn't. That's the best advice I could give on going natural is just to remember that going natural means allowing your hair to be as uniquely divine as the good Lord intended her to be. So, what works for one natural may not particularly work for you. Experiment and grow with her!

Is there anything you like to add? Thank you so much for reaching out to me and helping the many of us in our eco-friendly community spread the word on how great the lifestyle change is.
