Green Light- Michelle

An eco-sista who likes that she is not polluting the earth as much as she used to

How long have you been eco-friendly? I have been eco-friendly for 7 years now.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I didn't choose the eco-friendly life, it kinda choose me. Lol no seriously. When I moved to my current location, they had recycling rules and fines. The transition took some work, but now it's second nature. We have also been trading out light bulbs in for eco-friendly ones. Purchasing bottled water made of recycled plastic and less plastic too.

What do you like about it? I just like knowing that somehow I'm not polluting the earth as much as I used to. I try to recycle or re-use everything I can, until it's on it's last leg lol.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? The biggest obstacle I faced when I transitioned into an eco-friendlier lifestyle was forcing myself out of my previous "dump it all" habit. Sometimes, I would forget to sort the glass, aluminum, paper, and plastics, and accidentally toss them all in the garbage. But, eventually I got the hand of it. Not running the water if it's not being used. Turning off the lights and TV when you leave a room. At first, I had to go back and double check those things. Now, it just happens. Even my son reminds me to turn off the lights and he's two.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? My tip would definitely be to do what you feel is best for you. You have to creep and inch your way into it. Trying to force yourself to live up to someone else's eco-friendly lifestyle may discourage you and you could also be setting yourself up to fail. You don't have to live in a hut either. Just make the changes you're comfortable with and make it fun.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? I honestly don't feel like a green hypocrite. LOL. I don't really care to judge anyone's life or how they choose to live theirs. I've been to plenty of houses where they don't recycle or they keep all of their lights on and all the TVs. I have been cursed out a few times for turning off unnecessary lights. But, I understand that everyone lives their lives within their comfort zone and you can't really be mad about that.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I've been natural for over a year now. It was definitely one of the best scalp decisions I've ever made. I'm the queen of flat-twists. I keep my hair flat-twisted during the week, my mini protective style, and I fro on the weekends. I do protein treatments bi-weekly and I deep condition weekly. The LOC method is my best friend. And I mostly use organic and natural hair products.

Is there anything you like to add? You can find me on me at Natural Hair Junkies
