Green Light- Shelly

An eco-sista who made the change to be more organic

How long have you been eco-friendly? I went natural August 2011, since then I have been more aware of the products I use in my hair, on my skin, and what goes into my body. So, now I pay attention to what I buy and use overall.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I don't think I chose to be eco-friendly. I think it's just something that develops when I chopped my hair off. I became more conscious about what goes into products and my food. I think we all need to get to a point where we stop and think about stuff like that. Ask ourselves, is this bottle of "xyz" good for me and the environment? Is it tested on animals? Is it packed with harmful chemicals?

What do you like about it? It just make me feel good that I am doing some good for me and my family by making sure the things we use and eat are friendly to the environment. When I stopped and think about the stuff they do to plants and animals to make products get to your shopping carts quicker, I had to make a change and be more organic. End of story! Lol!

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? I did not face any obstacles because I was and still doing me. Am I totally there? No- But it's cool. I am learning, finding myself, and finding my purpose. I am not vegan. I still eat meat. However this is all a transition for me (one step at a time). I decide to spend the extra and get organic foods and products that not chemically altered and have ingredients I know and can pronounce... if you get what I mean. I am starting a vegetarian challenge Feb 1st to 14th and that in itself is progress.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? I say, do you! Start slow. Understand why you are doing it. Do your research. Make these life changes because you want to and not because someone else tells you to. But then ask yourself. wouldn't you feel better using natural products and eating cleaner food than stuffing.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? See, this question is actually what I stressed above. There are no right or wrong way...only YOUR way. Start slow. Do something, you will learn from it and be motivated to do something else and thats how you grow and RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? Ooooh Girl!!! Lol! Yes, a hair question! Ok, So I have been natural since Aug 6, 2011 (yes I still remember the date, time, and temperature outside the day of my chop). Lol! I like a big Fro so my signature style is a Braid Out. I like it because I get the most curl definition and more length than a twist out. Twist-outs hate me... I swear. I wake up and my twist out become a 'flop-out'. Throw some cute earrings on and girllll I am Out!!! Hehehe!
