Green Light- Tasha

An eco-sista who loves to read and is a glutton for truth

How long have you been eco-friendly? I would probably have to say within the last 3 or 4 years

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I love to read and I'm a glutton for truth. With that combo, it was only a matter of time before I came across PETA. Yes. PETA started it all for me. Although I am not a vegetarian (yet), once I began to learn of the harsh conditions that animals were raised in for the sake of consumers demand for meats, I had to make changes. I began to read about GMOs, carcinogens, and all other types of harmful additives in the foods we consume and I could help but relate it to the influx of cancers, obesity, and other diseases that are so rampant today.

What do you like about it? I feel good about making better choices for me and my family. Even for my MILK + HONEY customers. People like to know that you as a company took the extra step to ensure that your customers have quality ingredients. My family is enjoying the journey. It has caused us to think and try to live healthier. My body began to feel different once I began to eat cleaner and reduce the "junk" that I was exposing myself to on the regular.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? Oh boy! Yes! For me, being more eco-friendly causes me to have to plan and be strategic. Everything from day to day purchases to how I think as a consumer. With a background in marketing, I've learned to READ the labels. I mean, really read. Companies are so crafty in the way they word what's in their products and foods. It's challenging because you can never get comfortable. Things are always changing, companies are always trying to make more money which means that they are always reconsidering what they spend, what they make, and how they can get us to purchase it. Staying informed in a competitive world is tough!

The biggest obstacle for me is consistency. On days when I may get too busy or don't plan in advance, I tend to fall back into what I know. This is eating wise and purchasing wise. It's so easy to regress when you haven't budgeted of meal planned but remaining consistent is what you are doing definitely key.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly?Read, read, read, and read! And when you're all done reading... read some more! There's a wealth of information online. I make it a point to read labels and magazines whenever I get a chance. It helps to "stay in the know" of your environment and the food/products you consume. Also, stick to your guns. I get a lot of flack because of my eating and product choices. In the end, people will only give you a hard time if they don't have a clear understanding of what it means to be eco-friendly.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? A green hypocrite or a green nazi! What can I say? When you're on to something great, you want to inform the world. Unfortunately, the world doesn't always want to know the truth about harmful chemicals, GMOs, and every other potentially harmful thing we've been exposed to.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I have been natural since October 2007. I have a simple regimen and I don't do much! lol! I have learned to listen to may hair and only do what it asks me to do. That means, I don't wash or moisturize every x amount of days. If my hair is dry, I moisturize. If it's dirty, I wash. I only rotate through 3-5 different hair styles. Less is more for me. The less I do to my mane, the more it grows!

Is there anything you like to add? Yes. I have two words... DO YOU! In a world where everyone is on a journey to finding their individuality, do not allow THINGS to define who you are. DO NOT allow anybody to speak to you out of their insecurity and have you second guess the greatness down on the inside of you and who you are!
