Green Light- Dawn

An eco-sista who says living an eco-friendly lifestyle makes her feel amazing

How long have you been eco-friendly? I've been eco-friendly for about ten years and especially after moving from New York City to Los Angeles. It started with recycling and using natural household and beauty products. The more information that I received the more changes I slowly incorporated into my life.

Why did you choose to bee eco-friendly? Being eco-friendly truly benefits my personal health, those around me, and the planet. We are all connected so everything that I choose to do effects the big picture.

What do you like about it? Living an eco-friendly lifestyle makes me feel amazing because I'm doing my part to help the planet. I also enjoy making my own beauty products that are healthy and effective for me and the environment.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? My current obstacle is eliminating as much one time use plastic from my daily life since it does not decompose and is toxic to recycle. This is extremely challenging since many food items have some form of plastic packaging. Even a comb I purchased recently came in an un-recyclable plastic bag. Although recycling is wonderful, reducing the amount of plastic that is used is most ideal.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? One of the easiest and most affordable ways to go green is to minimize consumerism. When you learn how products are made, whom they affect, and the impact they have on the planet, you have a new realization on how you choose to spend your money. A video by The Story of Stuff Project really opened my eyes. I now consciously make choices on what I spend my money on versus being persuaded by advertising and media.

Being eco-friendly can also include buying organic food from your local farmer's markets, using natural and DIY household cleaners, making your own beauty products, and shopping consignment, vintage, and thrift stores. It can be a lot of fun and joy knowing that you are helping to heal the planet through your everyday choices.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? I try not to put too much pressure on myself. Whenever you decide to make new choices, you must have patience with the process and also find joy in it. I am always learning something new about living an earth friendly life.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I've been embracing my natural hair for over ten years. I kept my hair short for most of it and even had locs for awhile too. I started really learning how to care for my hair when I started creating my own hair products. I keep a simple hair care regimen that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and a henna deep conditioning treatment. Henna keeps my hair extremely strong and healthy.

Is there anything you like to add? Thank you so much Maggi for asking me to be a part of the "Green Light" feature that shares how so many beautiful women share their eco lifestyles! I've truly enjoyed reading other women's stories as well as sharing my own.
