Green Light- Rochelle

An eco-sista who says eco-friendly products encourage and enable healthy lifestyles

How long have you been eco-friendly? As I move towards being more eco-conscious, I find that every day I am evolving. It is definitely a learning process for me that really began to unfold when I started blending my own hair & skin care ingredients to create Alikay Naturals in 2009. Working with different vitamins and minerals found in nature enabled me to become more educated on the role that natural resources play in the nourishment of our bodies and souls.

Why did you choose to bee eco-friendly? My early childhood in the Jamaican countryside with my herbalist grandmother exposed me to an eco-friendly foundation that I am now building on. Crops weren't grown with pesticides and there was a different relationship with natural resources. Eco-friendly products are made with fewer raw materials. I like that eco-friendly products have less impact on the environment. I also believe naturals shouldn't have to compromise the health of their hair and environment just to get the results they want. You CAN have both.

What do you like about it? Eco-friendly products encourage and enable healthy lifestyles. Thus, they encourage safe living for future generations. Eco-friendly products are generally manufactured in an environmentally sound process. So, there is less emission of toxic waste and harmful chemicals. There is also a significant reduction of waste in the production process. Sustainable products have a longer payback period and represent the correct use of resources.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? Initially, limited resources in Fort Myers, FL

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Take it one day at a time. A little goes a long way.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There's really no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? It doesn't take years of work or huge investment to make a difference in the environment. Shifting to green practices in dozens of small ways can be done easily and quickly, and often with little financial investment. I believe that all of us could just do a little something to conserve resources, to limit our actions, we CAN slow down the global warming process.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I have been natural since 2008. Hydration is definitely the key to FLY natural hair.  I follow a healthy hair regimen which includes deep conditioning on a weekly basis using either our Avocado Creme Moisture Repairing Mask or Honey & Sage Deep Conditioner. This regimen also includes keeping my hair hydrated on a daily basis with the Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave-in-Conditioner and locking in that moisture weekly by applying Shine Crave Hair Glosser followed by either one of our fabulous moisturizers: Shea Yogurt hair Moisturizer or Moisture Rich Hair Parfait.

Is there anything you like to add? I will be sharing more of my healthy natural hair tips on Saturday, 8/3 at the Olive Garden right here in Fort Myers Tea, Talk, and Tresses. Can't make it to the 8/3 Tea, Talk, and Tresses workshop? Stop by the Black Onyx World Boutique in Fort Myers, at 13850 Treeline Ave S, Monday-Friday.
