Green Light- Leslie

An eco-sista who feels more connected to the world around her

How long have you been eco-friendly?  Wow, I guess I would say I am working toward becoming more eco-friendly all the time. I think becoming eco-friendly is something that I continually strive toward, something that continues to evolve in my daily life. I would say I became more conscious of living a more natural lifestyle almost 10 years ago. Over time, I have become more aware of the daily choices  make and how they impact the world around me.

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I think once you're aware of the damages we've done as humans to this planet, the question becomes, how can you continue to live and not become more eco-friendly?  I am by no means perfect but I try to be as aware as I can of what I am contributing to and taking from our planet. I feel like we should leave this place better than when we found it.

What do you like about it? I like that it makes me feel more connect to the planet and world around me. I think if you step back and realize that what you're doing today will impact the generations to come after you, it is easier to realize how truthfully we are all connected. We are not simply individuals as our culture would like us to believe. We are all part of the same plan and I think we literally get what we give.

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is the biggest obstacle(s)? The biggest obstacles always seem to come from within, not external factors, in my opinion. When I don't feel like taking something to be recycled or I waste things when I know they could be used, that all comes from my laziness. It takes effort to go beyond what you learned growing up. Luckily, as a society I think we are slowly becoming more aware of the earths dwindling resources and how we must make changes now before things become irreversible.

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Try to take it day by day and make small changes at a time. Like I said at the beginning, I am by no means an eco guru! I just make adjustments as I learn new things and slowly but surely there are many things in my routine that have evolved in a greener direction.

Going green can be complex. This discourages a lot of people. There’s really no “right” way it’s basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? Of course! Living in modern society, especially a consumer-driven one, makes it hard to resist the temptation to have shiny new things all the time or over-indulge instead of living out of necessity.  I just try to do the best I can and don't beat myself up about things. If you are too hard on yourself, I think you just give up instead of pushing forward. A healthy attitude and balance is best.

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? I have been natural since 2000! I transitioned for a year during my senior year of HS and I cut off all the relaxed ends the day after my HS graduation. I've learned that less is more when it comes to styling and products. Also, the longer the hair gets, the less it should be manipulated to avoid tangles and breakage. Moisture is key!

Is there anything you like to add?
Thanks for the feature and the inspiration to keep moving forward in an eco-conscious way!
