Green Light- Naterra

An eco- sista who say's keep it simple and you'll soon start to see the BIG picture.

How long have you been eco-friendly?I've been eco friendly since 2008, so I'm still pretty new to it!

Why did you choose to be eco-friendly? I decided to be eco friendly after watching a program on campus about sustainability. I didn't realize how much my decisions were impacting the environment. Something as simple as leaving the water on while brushing my teeth, to driving to the grocery store on the corner, instead of walking. All of these seemingly small parts of my life, were leading to huge issues on the planet! It was eye opening!

What do you like about it? I like that I know that I'm making a difference, even if only a small one. Being eco friendly has also helped me to become healthier! I pay attention to what I put on my skin, in my hair and in my food. I took on a vegan diet for a while, to become more aware of the way our food production impacts the environment. I'm no longer vegan, but I eat way more fruits, veggies and natural grains! It's awesome! I feel more alive!

Did you face any challenges? If so, what was/is your biggest obstacle(s)? Well, while attending college it was easy. They included sustainability efforts all across campus. There were recycling bins in every classroom foyer and there were also numerous pamphlets and programs to learn more about being eco-friendly. But, when I went back home, I had to explain my new diet, why I was trying to recycle everything and why I kept walking around unplugging everything, lol! My biggest obstacle was going natural! My family was totally against relaxers, but somehow, wearing my hair curly was an abomination! I couldn't believe it! They all love my hair now, though they push me to straighten from time to time!

Any tips/advice for someone looking to be more eco-friendly? Start simple. Try to cut down your time in the shower, use reusable water bottles, try to use the natural sunlight during the day, instead of lights. These things can make a huge impact! And spread the word. A lot of people aren't aware of the many ways that they can help, share your knowledge!

Going green can be complex. This discourages alot of people. There really is no "right" way it's basically trying to do something than nothing at all. I sometimes feel like a green hypocrite. Do you feel that way sometimes? Sometimes, but we have to realize that we can only do so much. We can't beat ourselves up for that. Even if you only recycle once every blue moon, it helps. Once you recognize that it'll be easier to see the BIG picture!

You know I gotta ask, How long have you been natural and how do you keep it so FLY? Well I've only had a couple relaxers in my life and both were horrendously damaging. My last relaxer was in 2003, after growing it out for the next year I got all of the damage cut off. After that I flat ironed like a junky! After realizing how heat was affecting my hair I stopped and did a mini-BC in May 2009. Since I've been completely natural, straightening only 3 times! My hair definitely shows the difference. I listen to my hair. Like most of us, it's a constant journey. I moisturize daily, shampoo when needed and I just go from there. I rock everything from updos to braidouts and it just depends on my hair!

Is there anything you like to add? Remember that you're only one person. You can't save the world, but you can definitely do the small things! Don't give up!
